The drive from Los Angeles takes four hours, the last of them on unpaved road that cuts through land so spare and so vast that the idea of placing a house in it seems almost violent. Tom Kundig designed this desert retreat over seven years, returning to the site season after season, watching how light moved across the terrain, how rain changed the colour of the rock.
